Rabies Scare in Uttar Pradesh: Over 450 Villagers Vaccinated After Consuming Prasad Made from Infected Cow's Milk
Health authorities in Uttar Pradesh mobilized to vaccinate over 450 residents after an infected cow died of suspected rabies days after its milk was used to prepare temple prasad.

Precautionary Health Drive Launched in Rural UP
A massive precautionary immunization campaign was launched in rural Uttar Pradesh after more than 450 villagers were administered anti-rabies vaccines. The medical intervention followed the sudden death of a cow suspected of contracting rabies after being bitten by a stray canine, days after its milk was distributed as religious offering (prasad).
Local administrative officials confirmed that the cow had been bitten by a stray dog several days earlier. While initially appearing unaffected, the animal's milk was collected and boiled to prepare sweet offerings for a religious gathering attended by hundreds of local residents across neighboring hamlets.
Symptoms Emerge Following Village Gathering
Within days of the religious gathering, the bovine began displaying classic clinical indicators of rabies, including aggression, excessive salivation, and severe neurological distress, before collapsing and succumbing to the illness.
News of the animal's death triggered widespread concern among villagers who had consumed the consecrated food. Fearing secondary transmission, community elders alerted local administrative and healthcare authorities, prompting an immediate mobilization of medical teams.
Medical Response and Mass Immunization
District health officials dispatched mobile medical units to set up emergency vaccination camps in the village to evaluate residents and administer post-exposure prophylaxis.
Key actions taken by the district administration include:
* Rapid Screening: Over 450 individuals who confirmed consuming the milk-based offerings were registered for clinical observation. * Vaccine Deployment: Multi-dose anti-rabies regimens were initiated immediately to safeguard villagers against potential viral exposure. * Community Counseling: Healthcare workers conducted door-to-door awareness sessions to mitigate panic and explain transmission risks. * Veterinary Surveillance: Animal husbandry teams were directed to identify and monitor stray animals in the vicinity for symptoms of rabies.
Transmission Risks and Protocol
Medical experts emphasize that while rabies transmission through the consumption of cooked or boiled dairy products is biologically improbable—as the rabies virus is thermolabile and readily inactivated by heat and gastric acids—authorities opted not to take any chances.
"The risk of oral transmission from boiled dairy products remains exceptionally low. However, given the universally fatal outcome of symptomatic rabies, standard operational protocols prioritize abundant caution. We initiated the vaccination schedule to eliminate any residual risk, particularly if individuals had pre-existing mucosal micro-abrasions," noted a senior public health official overseeing the operation.
Health authorities confirmed that all recipients of the vaccine will be tracked to complete their full vaccination course, while surveillance teams remain deployed in the region to monitor for any secondary veterinary cases.
