In a notable legal reprieve, an Uttar Pradesh court has cancelled the outstanding warrant issued against media personality and actor Rakhi Sawant in connection with a 14-year-old abetment to suicide case.

The matter stems from an incident dating back to late 2010, following the broadcast of the reality television program Rakhi Ka Insaaf. A participant on the show, Lakshman Singh, a resident of Jhansi, allegedly died by suicide shortly after appearing on the program. Family members of the deceased filed a formal complaint alleging that derogatory remarks and public humiliation during the broadcast severely distressed Singh, ultimately driving him to take the extreme step.

Longstanding Judicial Proceedings

Following the complaint, local police registered an FIR under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code against Sawant and associated production personnel. Over the subsequent decade, the matter witnessed numerous adjournments and procedural hurdles, with multiple summons issued to the accused to secure their presence before the bench.

After repeated non-appearances across several scheduled hearings, the court had previously issued a non-bailable warrant to compel Sawant's attendance.

Defense Submissions and Recall of Warrant

During recent proceedings, Sawant’s legal counsel approached the trial court seeking the cancellation of the warrant. The defense team submitted that her prior absences were neither deliberate nor intentional, pointing to procedural delays in summons delivery and pre-existing professional commitments.

Upon reviewing the defense applications and verifying the formal undertakings presented by counsel ensuring representation and cooperation in upcoming proceedings, the court recalled the warrant, extending procedural relief to the actor.

Show Background and Ongoing Legal Scrutiny

Rakhi Ka Insaaf, which aired in late 2010, was structured around resolving personal and domestic disputes on public television. The show attracted regulatory scrutiny and viewer complaints during its initial broadcast run, leading broadcast authorities at the time to order scheduling adjustments to late-night slots.

With the warrant now cancelled, the court has directed all parties to adhere strictly to the schedule for remaining procedural arguments as the trial moves toward conclusion.
