UP Court Acquits Rahul Gandhi in 2018 Defamation Case Involving Amit Shah
A special MP-MLA court in Sultanpur has acquitted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a 2018 defamation case over comments directed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The verdict was delivered by the Special Magistrate Court for MPs and MLAs in Sultanpur, which held that the prosecution failed to substantiate the allegations beyond reasonable doubt.
Background of the 2018 Defamation Complaint
The case dates back to August 2018, when local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vijay Mishra filed a criminal defamation complaint against Rahul Gandhi under Sections 500 (punishment for defamation) and 501 (printing or engraving matter known to be defamatory) of the Indian Penal Code.
The complaint cited statements made by Gandhi during a press conference in Bengaluru in May 2018 amidst the Karnataka Assembly election campaign, where he had made critical political remarks referring to Shah, who was then serving as the national president of the BJP.
Mishra claimed that the remarks tarnished the image of both the party and its leadership, prompting him to seek criminal proceedings against the senior Congress leader.
Court Proceedings and Legal Relief
The Sultanpur court had earlier issued summons requiring Gandhi to appear in person. In February 2024, the Congress leader halted his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra to present himself before the special magistrate, where he secured bail upon furnishing two personal sureties.
During the trial, the defense argued that Gandhi's comments were part of robust democratic discourse during an electoral campaign and carried no personal malice or defamatory intent as defined under criminal law. The defense further emphasized that the complainant was not an aggrieved party directly targeted by the alleged statements.
Following prolonged arguments and examination of witness testimonies, the special court concluded that the charges were not substantiated by adequate legal evidence, resulting in Gandhi's formal acquittal.
Political Implications
The acquittal eliminates one of several lingering legal challenges faced by Rahul Gandhi across various jurisdictions in defamation matters. Legal advisors for the Congress party welcomed the decision, characterizing it as a vindication of freedom of expression within political discourse.
