Power Grid Crisis Across Southern Haryana

A statewide strike by power utility personnel plunged large swathes of Haryana, including the corporate hub of Gurugram and rural belts in Rewari, into prolonged darkness, bringing daily life and commercial operations to a grinding halt.

The strike, spearheaded by electrical employee unions and federations, disrupted emergency repair protocols, substation maintenance, and routine distribution, leaving high-density residential sectors and industrial zones without electricity for hours.

Key disruptions reported across the region include:

* Commercial corridors crippled: IT campuses, co-working facilities, and commercial towers across Gurugram's Cyber City and Golf Course Road relied entirely on heavy-duty diesel generators, escalating operational overheads. * Civic blockades in Rewari: Frustrated by overnight blackouts and water shortages, villagers in Rewari took to arterial highways, blocking traffic with tractor-trolleys and demanding immediate restoration of power grids. * Residential distress: Apartment complexes and plotted colonies faced acute drinking water shortages as overhead pump systems remained non-operational due to unstable grid voltage.

Unresolved Demands Behind the Agitation

The coordinated demonstration stems from prolonged standoffs between state distribution companies—including Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN)—and power employee federations. Union representatives have been demanding the rollout of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), regularisation of contractual line workers, filling of thousands of technical vacancies, and guarantees against the privatisation of distribution infrastructure.

"Field staff and technical operators are overburdened and operating under hazardous conditions without adequate safety mechanisms or job security," stated a senior union convenor coordinating the statewide agitation. "The administration gave assurances during earlier negotiations but failed to issue concrete notification orders."

Industrial Belts and Healthcare Under Pressure

Manufacturing clusters across Manesar, Bawal, and Dharuhera experienced severe production setbacks, particularly continuous-process manufacturing plants and automotive component units that cannot sustain erratic voltage fluctuations.

While critical facilities such as tertiary hospitals and trauma centers sustained operations via backup generators, outpatient clinics, diagnostic laboratories, and local pharmacies reported inventory concerns over temperature-sensitive medical supplies and vaccines.

Administrative Response and Contingency Measures

In response to escalating civic unrest, district administrations deployed executive magistrates and police teams to negotiate with protesting villagers and clear vital transit routes in Rewari. Senior administrative officials issued directives mandating essential maintenance crews to resume duty under contingency protocols.

State authorities have cautioned that strict provisions under the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) could be invoked if technical personnel do not restore supply to sensitive installations and public distribution networks swiftly. High-level rounds of conciliation talks between administrative secretaries and employee union leaders remain underway in an effort to break the operational deadlock.
