Asian Para Games: India's Bhavikkumar Hathila Stripped of 400m T47 Silver Following Lane Violation
Indian para-athlete Bhavikkumar Hathila lost his 400m T47 silver medal at the Asian Para Games following a technical lane infringement disqualification.

Hathila had initially delivered a stellar performance on the track, crossing the finish line in second position to secure what appeared to be another podium finish for India's contingent. However, an official post-race review by track referees overturned the result, invoking technical regulations governing lane discipline.
Technical Review Leads to Disqualification
Under World Para Athletics rules, athletes competing in lane-assigned sprint events must strictly stay within their designated lanes, particularly through the bends. Following the conclusion of the race, technical delegates reviewed the footage and determined that Hathila had stepped on or crossed the lane boundary line, violating World Para Athletics Technical Rule 17.3.1.
The infringement resulted in an immediate disqualification (DQ), voiding his timing and vacating the second-place finish. Consequently, the remaining competitors behind him were elevated in the final standings, reshaping the medal distribution for the event.
Understanding the T47 Classification
The T47 class is designated for track athletes with unilateral upper limb impairment, such as limb deficiency, impaired muscle power, or impaired passive range of movement in one arm. In events like the 400 meters, competitors must balance extreme physical exertion, pacing, and precise lane discipline throughout staggered curves.
While lane infringements are common in high-intensity sprint events across major championships, they present a heartbreaking setback for athletes who have pushed through grueling qualification rounds.
Indian Contingent's Resilient Campaign
Despite the setback of Hathila's disqualification, India's track-and-field contingent has maintained an exceptional overall run at the continental tournament, consistently securing medals across track, jumping, and throwing disciplines. Team officials acknowledged the strict adherence to technical officiating, focusing on channeling their momentum into upcoming sprint and field fixtures across the remaining days of competition.
