In a strategic move to fortify domestic talent scouting and age-group development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former international fast bowler Parvinder Awana as the new chairman of the junior men's selection committee.

Awana, a stalwart of Delhi domestic cricket who earned two international caps for India in Twenty20 cricket, assumes the pivotal leadership mantle responsible for charting the progression of emerging cricketers across the country.

Strengthening the Grassroots Pipeline

The junior selection panel plays an indispensable role within the Indian cricketing ecosystem. Tasked with scouting, monitoring, and picking squads for high-stakes national and international age-group tournaments, the committee oversees:

* Under-19 National Squads: Identifying core squads for bilateral tours, the ACC U-19 Asia Cup, and ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup campaigns. * Domestic Age-Group Tournaments: Monitoring competitive fixtures including the Cooch Behar Trophy and Vinoo Mankad Trophy. * NCA & High-Performance Pathways: Coordinating with the National Cricket Academy (NCA) coaching staff to track player biomechanics, conditioning, and transition rates into senior domestic ranks.

Awana's extensive playing background brings direct seam-bowling insights to a selection setup increasingly focused on nurturing high-caliber pace depth across India's domestic circuits.

A Veteran Domestic Workhorse

Awana carved out a reputation as an indefatigable workhorse across a domestic career spanning more than a decade. The 38-year-old former right-arm pacer represented Delhi in 62 first-class matches, capturing 191 wickets at an average of 31.40, alongside 63 List A wickets and 77 dismissals in the shortest format.

His consistent domestic performances and fierce competitive temperament earned him a national call-up in December 2012, when he featured in two T20 Internationals against England. Awana also gained considerable franchise experience, spearheading the bowling attack for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) across several Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons, most notably during their run to the 2014 IPL final.

Following his retirement from active cricket in 2018, Awana transitioned into mentorship and local coaching setups, remaining deeply invested in junior and club-level talent spotting.

Clear Focus on Under-19 Continuity

With global age-group cricket demanding heightened athletic fitness, mental conditioning, and adaptability across conditions, the revamped committee under Awana will face immediate operational priorities. India's track record at the Under-19 World Cup—having clinched a record five titles—places substantial institutional expectation on the junior committee to identify match-winners well before their senior professional transitions.

Officials within the cricket board expressed confidence that Awana's firsthand knowledge of modern fast bowling and multi-format domestic grind will provide clarity, consistency, and transparent progression pathways for India's next generation of cricketing stars.
