Land Rover Defender 110 Gets Local Assembly in India, Prices Start at Rs 99 Lakh
Jaguar Land Rover India has commenced domestic assembly of the iconic Defender 110, sharply reducing entry prices to Rs 99 lakh.

Previously imported as completely built-up (CBU) units subject to steep customs duties, the shift to local assembly marks a turning point for the model, making one of the country's most sought-after luxury SUVs substantially more accessible to Indian buyers.
Price Rationalization and Market Positioning
The transition to local assembly has allowed JLR to pass substantial tax and duty savings directly onto consumers. Prior to this development, the imported Defender 110 retailed well above Rs 1.35 crore, depending on powertrain configurations and trim choices.
At an entry price of Rs 99 lakh, the Defender 110 now mounts a direct challenge against established luxury mid-to-full-size SUVs, including the Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5, and Audi Q7. Despite the reduced price tag, the company confirmed that the locally assembled models will retain identical build quality, off-road hardware, and premium interior appointments.
Engine Options and Capability
The locally assembled Defender 110 lineup is expected to mirror the mechanical configurations favored by Indian consumers:
* Petrol Powertrain: A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine generating approximately 300 hp and 400 Nm of torque. * Diesel Option: A robust 3.0-liter inline-six twin-turbocharged diesel producing around 300 hp and 650 Nm of torque. * Transmission and Drivetrain: An 8-speed automatic torque-converter gearbox paired with Land Rover's signature permanent all-wheel-drive (AWD) system and twin-speed transfer box. * Off-Road Tech: Standard electronic air suspension, Terrain Response 2 suite, and wading depth capabilities up to 900 mm.
Deepening JLR's Domestic Footprint
The decision to localize the Defender 110 follows JLR's recent strategy to expand Indian manufacturing operations under parent company Tata Motors. Earlier this year, the British luxury marque initiated local assembly of its flagship Range Rover and Range Rover Sport nameplates, breaking precedent by building the marquee vehicles outside the United Kingdom for the very first time.
The Defender series has accounted for a substantial portion of JLR's record sales growth in India over the past two fiscal years, fueled by heavy demand across major metropolitan markets and tier-two industrial hubs. Local assembly ensures shorter delivery backlogs, competitive financing options, and broader spare-parts availability across the nationwide dealer network.
Bookings for the locally assembled Defender 110 have formally commenced, with customer deliveries slated to begin in the coming weeks.
