A Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus collided with multiple four-wheelers near the Madras High Court in Chennai on Tuesday, inflicting heavy damage on several vehicles and bringing traffic across the busy commercial arterial roads to a virtual standstill.

The collision occurred during busy road transit hours near the junction approaching Parry's Corner and Rajaji Salai, one of the most heavily congested transport corridors in the Tamil Nadu capital. Preliminary reports indicate that the public bus suddenly surged forward, ramming into cars halted at or approaching the intersection.

Chain-Reaction Collision at Busy Junction

According to eyewitnesses and initial police accounts, the government-operated bus failed to brake in time, impacting the rear of a sedan before initiating a chain-reaction collision that crumpled the bumpers and boots of at least three to four private cars.

Motorists and pedestrians in the immediate vicinity rushed to assist those trapped inside the mangled cars. Fortunately, early assessments indicate that serious casualties were averted, though several occupants sustained minor abrasions and shock as air bags deployed across multiple vehicles.

"The impact was loud, and the bus simply did not halt until it pushed the preceding car into another vehicle," recounted a local shopkeeper near the High Court junction. "Commuters panicked, but bystanders quickly intervened to help pull drivers out of the damaged cars."

Extensive Traffic Gridlock in George Town Hub

The accident caused an immediate choke point in George Town, cascading severe traffic snarls through NSC Bose Road, Rajaji Salai, and approaches to the Chennai Central railway hub. Commuters experienced prolonged delays extending upwards of 45 minutes as damaged vehicles occupied key transit lanes.

Personnel from the Greater Chennai Traffic Police were deployed swiftly to secure the perimeter, manage frustrated motorists, and coordinate the arrival of recovery cranes to clear the wreckage. Normal traffic flow was gradually restored after the involved vehicles were towed to the roadside.

Technical Probe Launched

Traffic investigation authorities have initiated an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the crash. Both potential mechanical failure, including sudden brake malfunction, and driver distraction or negligence are being examined.

The MTC driver has been detained for questioning, and mechanical inspectors are set to conduct a comprehensive fitness check on the involved government bus. The incident has once again turned the spotlight on the maintenance standards and operating conditions of Chennai's aging public bus fleet.
