BJP Accuses Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan of 'Selective Secularism' Amid Kochi Cafe Row
The BJP has targeted Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, alleging double standards and 'selective secularism' following a controversy involving a cafe in Kochi.

The confrontation emerged following controversy surrounding a commercial cafe establishment in Kochi that included beef on its menu, prompting sharp debate over dietary choices, religious sensibilities, and administrative oversight. The opposition party argued that the state machinery displays an asymmetric approach when addressing controversies tied to different faith communities.
Ideological Clash Over State Policy
State BJP leaders accused the CPI(M)-led government of adopting dual metrics when dealing with public sentiments. Addressing reporters, opposition spokespersons argued that while the administration often cites constitutional freedoms and progressive plurality to defend specific cultural and dietary choices, it routinely fails to exhibit the same sensitivity toward traditional beliefs held by majority communities.
"The Chief Minister's definition of secularism appears to shift depending on the community involved," a senior party representative claimed, questioning why regulatory enforcement and political messaging are applied unevenly across public controversies.
Party leaders maintained that law enforcement and civic bodies must apply municipal norms and public order considerations uniformly, rather than allowing commercial disputes to become platforms for ideological posturing.
LDF Defends Kerala's Pluralistic Culture
Rejecting the allegations, leaders from the ruling Left front defended the administration's stance, asserting that Kerala has consistently upheld constitutional principles protecting individual liberty and culinary autonomy. Senior LDF functionaries stated that commercial food establishments operating under valid licenses retain the fundamental right to serve customary cuisines without intimidation or political interference.
Government sources underscored that Kerala's historical traditions embrace diverse culinary and cultural expressions, emphasizing that attempts to communalize food habits or commercial hospitality businesses would not be tolerated.
"Kerala stands firmly by the rule of law and the constitutional rights of every citizen. The government does not prescribe what individuals should eat or what businesses may legitimately offer within the bounds of safety regulations," an administration official noted.
Broadening Political Friction in Kerala
The dispute reflects broader political tensions brewing across the southern coastal state, where ideological friction between the Left front and the BJP has intensified in recent months. Key friction points have frequently centered around the administration of cultural spaces, festival management, and public discourse regarding secular governance.
Political observers point out that with civic and legislative contests on the horizon, debates surrounding cultural identity, minority rights, and state neutrality are increasingly being leveraged by political players seeking to consolidate their ideological bases. As local authorities in Kochi maintain vigilant surveillance to prevent public disorder, the broader political debate over the parameters of secular governance in Kerala continues to escalate.
