Major Modernization Push for the Armed Forces

In one of the most substantial capital procurement clearances in recent years, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for multiple capital acquisition proposals amounting to over Rs 2.12 lakh crore. The sweeping approvals are poised to significantly augment the combat capabilities of the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force while delivering a major boost to domestic defense manufacturing.

The massive clearance underlines New Delhi's twin strategic imperatives: accelerating frontline modernization along contentious borders and reinforcing the 'Make in India' and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives across critical military hardware sectors.

Strengthening Air Defence and Unmanned Systems

A substantial tranche of the approved capital budget has been earmarked for advanced unmanned aerial platforms and multi-layered air defence systems. With modern conflicts highlighting the decisive role of autonomous systems, the clearances include specialized surveillance drones, loitering munitions, and counter-unmanned aerial vehicle (C-UAV) installations.

Key acquisitions cleared by the council include:

* Next-Generation Air Defence Systems: Indigenous surface-to-air missile batteries and quick-reaction interceptors aimed at securing tactical airspaces against low-flying cruise missiles and rogue drone swarms. * Helicopter Fleets: Multi-role utility and reconnaissance helicopters designed to replace aging light fleets, bolstering high-altitude operational capabilities in northern and eastern border sectors. * Tactical Drones and Reconnaissance Gear: Long-endurance autonomous systems equipped with synthetic aperture radar and thermal imaging pods for round-the-clock frontier monitoring.

Deepening Indigenous Industrial Ecosystem

In line with statutory defense procurement mandates, an overwhelming majority of the sanctioned value has been categorized under Buy (Indian-IDDM) and Buy (Indian) frameworks. This prioritizes Indian vendors and joint ventures over off-the-shelf foreign imports, ensuring that domestic public and private sector shipyards, aerospace firms, and ordnance fabricators secure substantial order books.

Officials indicated that these procurements will involve deep technology transfers, intellectual property retention, and widespread subcontracting across domestic Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Maritime Security and Land Operations

Beyond aerial platforms, the DAC granted approvals for naval upgrades, including ship-borne sensors, modern naval ordnance, and tactical communications suited for the Indian Ocean Region. For ground forces, investments in advanced mobility vehicles, secure software-defined radios, and next-generation artillery ammunition round out the comprehensive procurement suite.

With the grant of Acceptance of Necessity, the respective armed services and procurement directorates will now issue tenders, evaluate industrial technical trials, and finalize commercial contract negotiations before hardware induction begins over the coming quarters.
