Centre Grants One-Year Extension to Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh Until October 2027
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved a one-year service extension for Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, securing his leadership until October 2027.

The decision, approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underscores the administration's reliance on experienced leadership as the Ministry of Defence oversees several long-term structural reforms, defense modernization programs, and indigenous procurement initiatives.
Strengthening Strategic Continuity
Rajesh Kumar Singh, an accomplished 1989-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Kerala cadre, assumed the role of Defence Secretary following a distinguished career across key central ministries. Prior to taking charge at South Block, Singh served as Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), where he spearheaded critical commercial, industrial, and ease-of-doing-business frameworks.
The decision to extend his term provides a stable horizon of nearly three years, enabling the defence bureaucracy to navigate multi-year weapon acquisitions, military theaterisation, and collaborative manufacturing ventures.
Key Priorities on the Defence Agenda
With his tenure extended through late 2027, the Defence Secretary will steer key administrative and operational milestones, including:
* Military Theaterisation: Guiding the administrative and budgetary pathways for the planned integration of tri-services theater commands, coordinating closely with the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and the three armed forces chiefs. * Indigenisation and 'Make in India': Accelerating domestic defense production, reducing dependency on critical imports, and monitoring progress under the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP). * Capital Acquisition Programs: Expediting priority procurement files, including fighter aircraft acquisitions, naval submarine projects, advanced air defense systems, and modernized unmanned aerial platforms. * R&D and Defense Tech Integration: Deepening ties with start-ups, the private defense sector, and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) through initiatives such as iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence).
A Pattern of Institutional Stability
The central government has periodically extended the tenures of top bureaucratic leaders heading critical security portfolios, including the Cabinet Secretariat, Union Home Ministry, and the Ministry of External Affairs. Such extensions are designed to insulate core national security and defense policy from abrupt transitions during complex geopolitical situations and ongoing modernization pipelines.
Singh's prolonged tenure ensures steady coordination between military planners and civilian oversight during a crucial phase of modernization along India's northern and western borders.
