In a major breakthrough against transnational cybercrime and illicit financial pipelines, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested an advocate accused of playing a pivotal operational role in a sprawling Rs 28,000-crore cyber fraud syndicate spanning multiple states across India.

The arrest marks a decisive escalation in federal efforts to dismantle high-tech scam networks that systematically defraud retail investors and ordinary citizens using fraudulent investment apps, illegal gaming platforms, and coercive 'digital arrest' schemes.

Anatomy of the Rs 28,000-Crore Network

According to agency sources, the investigation was initiated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) following hundreds of First Information Reports (FIRs) filed by cybercrime police stations across multiple states.

Investigators uncovered an elaborate apparatus designed to siphon and layer illicit proceeds through thousands of shell entities and mule bank accounts:

* Digital Deception: The racket lured victims through social media campaigns promising lucrative stock market returns, part-time task scams, and deceptive institutional investment portfolios. * Coercive Cyber Schemes: Significant portions of the proceeds were generated through 'digital arrest' scams, wherein fraudsters impersonated law enforcement officials, interrogating victims over encrypted video calls to extort life savings. * Layered Banking Channels: Illicit funds were swiftly routed through hundreds of primary mule accounts before being consolidated into corporate current accounts belonging to shell companies. * Offshore Diversion: The laundered proceeds were converted into cryptocurrencies or routed through illegal hawala channels to international handlers based predominantly in Southeast Asian cyber hubs.

The Role of the Arrested Advocate

Investigators revealed that the arrested legal professional allegedly served as a crucial facilitator within the domestic money laundering architecture. Rather than providing bona fide legal counsel, the individual is accused of actively incorporating dummy entities, managing bank documentation, and facilitating the flow of dirty money under the guise of legitimate corporate transactions.

Agency officials noted that the advocate procured corporate identification numbers (CINs) and opened current accounts in nationalized and private banks using forged credentials. When accounts faced freezing orders from state police wings, the operative allegedly filed deceptive legal representations to unfreeze funds, enabling criminal syndicates to rapidly extract frozen balances.

Widening Multi-Agency Crackdown

Federal authorities have intensified surveillance on professional intermediaries—including chartered accountants, company secretaries, and legal practitioners—who provide administrative and legal cover to cyber syndicates.

"The scale of this operation demonstrates the evolution of cybercrime into industrial-scale money laundering," a senior investigator briefed on the case stated. "Legal professionals who abuse their standing to provide operational architecture to criminal syndicates will face strict accountability under anti-money laundering statutes."

The ED has secured the custody of the accused following production before a special PMLA court. Search operations are underway across multiple metropolitan hubs to trace remaining proceeds of crime, identify institutional insider accomplices, and impound digital ledgers linked to the multi-billion-rupee enterprise.
