Swift Action Averts Escalation at Central Secretariat

A minor fire scare briefly triggered alarm at the historic North Block complex in New Delhi on Thursday, prompting rapid intervention by on-site workers who contained the blaze before emergency responders arrived to secure the premises.

The North Block, an iconic red sandstone edifice on Raisina Hill, houses crucial Union government ministries, including the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Finance.

According to administrative officials and emergency service personnel, the incident occurred during routine working hours in an auxiliary section undergoing maintenance. Thick plumes of smoke were observed emanating from a localized spot, causing brief panic among staff and visitors within the vicinity.

Quick Thinking by On-Site Labourers

Before dedicated units from the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) arrived on the scene, attentive labourers and maintenance workers operating nearby acted with notable presence of mind. Utilizing on-site fire-suppression equipment, water hoses, and fire extinguishers, the workers tackled the source of the flames directly.

Their prompt intervention prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining corridors or administrative chambers that store vital official records.

"The workers on site reacted immediately upon noticing smoke. By deploying local fire containment tools, the fire was largely subdued within minutes," an official familiar with the developments confirmed.

Emergency Services Conduct Cooling and Safety Audit

Upon receiving the emergency dispatch, fire department units rushed multiple fire tenders to the high-security complex as part of standard operating protocol for Grade-A government installations.

Firefighters subsequently conducted thorough cooling operations and checked for any residual embers within false ceilings and electrical conduits. Preliminary inspections suggest an electrical short circuit or heat accumulation during ongoing maintenance work as the probable trigger, though technical examiners are reviewing the site to ascertain the precise cause.

No injuries, casualties, or significant loss to official property were reported in the aftermath of the incident. Normal administrative operations across the ministries resumed shortly after security teams cleared the area.
