A 72-year-old woman has been arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly stealing a bag belonging to an international tourist in Central Delhi's busy Paharganj area, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The incident took place in the heart of Paharganj, a bustling commercial and hospitality hub adjacent to the New Delhi Railway Station, widely frequented by overseas visitors and backpackers.

Investigation and CCTV Surveillance

According to police officials, the foreign national lodged an immediate complaint after realizing that their carry bag—containing personal documents, cash, and valuables—had gone missing from a local establishment.

Central District police units quickly initiated an inquiry, forming a specialized operational team to trace the culprit. Investigators meticulously scanned surveillance footage from over two dozen CCTV cameras installed across local guesthouses, market lanes, and transport transit points in the vicinity.

"The review of local surveillance feeds revealed an elderly woman discreetly lifting the victim's bag while the complainant was momentarily distracted. After tracking her movement patterns across adjacent narrow alleys, our teams successfully established her identity," a senior investigating officer stated.

Apprehension and Recovery

Following local intelligence and sustained tracking, police teams laid a trap and apprehended the septuagenarian suspect near the Paharganj perimeter.

Key details of the police action include: * Recovery of Belongings: The complainant’s stolen bag, along with vital identification papers and personal effects, was recovered intact from the accused. * Legal Proceedings: An FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) pertaining to theft, and the suspect was produced before a local court. * Verification of Background: Police are examining whether the accused has any prior criminal records or links to organized pickpocketing and theft syndicates operating around tourist corridors in Central Delhi.

Delhi Police have periodically issued advisories and intensified foot patrolling across Paharganj, Karol Bagh, and Connaught Place to curb petty thefts and ensure the safety of domestic and international travelers.
