IndiGo to Shift 12 International Flights to Navi Mumbai Airport to Ease Mumbai Air Congestion
IndiGo plans to shift 12 international operations to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, unlocking crucial runway capacity at congested CSMIA.

The scheduled reallocation is expected to occur in phases as the greenfield airport prepares for full-scale commercial passenger operations. By migrating select overseas departures and arrivals to the upcoming gateway, the country’s largest airline aims to streamline flight turnarounds, improve punctuality, and release tightly constrained takeoff and landing slots at Mumbai's primary airport.
Unlocking Capacity at a Choked Hub
For years, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has operated close to saturation limits. Constrained by cross-runway architecture that prevents simultaneous independent departures and arrivals, the airport handles over 900 movements daily on peak days, leading to frequent airspace holding patterns and ground delays during peak hours.
The relocation of 12 overseas services will free up pivotal peak-hour capacity at Terminal 2, enabling better domestic connectivity or potential long-haul additions while easing tarmac bottlenecks.
Key advantages of shifting operations to Navi Mumbai include:
* Runway Optimization: Offloading scheduled international movements frees up high-demand evening and late-night slots at CSMIA. * Operational Punctuality: Lower ground and taxiway traffic at the new terminal minimizes departure delays. * Catchment Expansion: Direct access for travelers originating from Navi Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and the wider Konkan corridor without traversing inner-city traffic.
Scaling Operations at Navi Mumbai International Airport
Developed under a public-private partnership, the Navi Mumbai facility is engineered to function as a dual-airport sister hub alongside CSMIA. The first operational phase features modern parallel runway infrastructure, multi-tier passenger terminals, and direct expressway links.
IndiGo’s commitment marks one of the earliest major international fleet assignments for the new airport. Airline planners are focused on short-to-medium-haul overseas routes—predominantly serving the Gulf, West Asia, and Southeast Asia—which account for significant outbound passenger volume from Maharashtra.
Dual-Hub Synergy for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region
Civil aviation authorities have long emphasized the need for a multi-airport system for Mumbai, mirroring international setups in London, Tokyo, and New York. With domestic air passenger traffic across India continuing double-digit year-on-year growth, the transition of select international routes provides immediate relief while establishing NMIA’s footprint as a global transit hub.
Airline operational teams and ground handlers are currently coordinating with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and airport concessionaires to finalize winter and summer slot allocations, apron parking configurations, and passenger transit protocols ahead of commercial liftoff.
