Controversial Graffiti on Jamia Campus Walls Ignites Fierce BJP-Congress Political Showdown
A major political storm has erupted after controversial slogans on Kashmir and Sharjeel Imam surfaced on Jamia Millia Islamia walls, prompting swift police action and political clashes.

The graffiti, discovered early in the morning by university security personnel and passersby, prompted an immediate administrative response, with campus authorities deploying staff to whitewash the defaced surfaces while Delhi Police stepped up vigilance around the perimeter.
University Administration Initiates Inquiry
According to campus officials, the defacement occurred under the cover of darkness along peripheral sections of the central university. Upon detection, administrative authorities directed sanitation teams to repaint the affected walls and launched an internal assessment.
"The university maintains a zero-tolerance policy against any unauthorized defacement of institutional property, particularly messages that attempt to disturb public order or communal harmony," an administrative official confirmed. Campus authorities have also begun reviewing exterior closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage to identify the individuals responsible for the nocturnal vandalism.
Delhi Police personnel stationed in the Southeast district visited the site, taking cognisance of the matter and coordinating with university security staff to prevent any potential breach of public order or campus unrest.
Political Confrontation Intensifies
The incident quickly snowballed into a major political confrontation between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition parties, notably the Congress.
Leaders from the BJP mounted a fierce offensive, alleging that such slogans reflect a persistent ideological radicalism nurtured by certain student factions and backed tacitly by opposition politicians. Party spokespersons questioned the Congress leadership, demanding to know whether the party condones separatist slogans and campaigns supporting figures arrested under anti-terror provisions.
"These provocative slogans are not merely campus pranks; they are an explicit challenge to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India," senior BJP leaders asserted in public remarks. "The opposition, particularly the Congress, must clarify its stance on elements who repeatedly challenge the nation's unity from academic institutions."
In response, opposition figures and student union representatives dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, accusing the ruling dispensation of attempting to polarize the public atmosphere ahead of crucial civic and legislative cycles.
Congress representatives maintained that vandalism by unidentified individuals should be handled strictly through lawful policing rather than weaponized for political point-scoring against the broader student fraternity. Several student representatives on campus also distanced themselves from the graffiti, suggesting the act could be an orchestrated attempt by external provocateurs to malign the university’s academic environment.
Context and Ongoing Sensitivity
Jamia Millia Islamia has frequently found itself at the center of heated national discourse since the intense protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in late 2019 and early 2020.
Sharjeel Imam, a former research scholar whose name featured prominently in the overnight graffiti, remains incarcerated under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with alleged inflammatory speeches delivered during that period and his purported role in the conspiracy behind the February 2020 North East Delhi communal violence.
Authorities have reinforced security patrols along the university's main transit corridors, and Delhi Police indicated that legal action under property defacement and public nuisance statutes is under active consideration as investigators trace those behind the incident.
