The family of the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata's state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has voiced serious concern and dismay after former hospital principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh secured bail in an alleged financial irregularities and corruption case.

While Ghosh remains in judicial custody in connection with the primary rape-murder case and allegations of evidence tampering, the legal relief granted to him in the graft investigation has triggered sharp criticism from the victim's parents, who questioned the efficacy and pace of central investigative agencies.

Concerns Over Investigative Lapses

Speaking to correspondents, the parents of the postgraduate trainee physician expressed profound distress over the procedural aspects that facilitated bail in the corruption matter. According to legal observers, procedural developments—including statutory provisions where chargesheets or prosecution sanctions encounter technical delays—often create pathways for accused individuals to seek default relief.

"We fail to comprehend how an individual central to the institutional rot at the hospital is granted bail in such a critical corruption case," the victim's father stated. "The financial irregularities and the broader administrative atmosphere at RG Kar cannot be separated from the administrative failures that led to our daughter's death. Every delay and procedural misstep weakens public faith in the investigation."

The victim's mother echoed the sentiment, expressing anxiety that administrative and procedural oversights by investigators could ultimately dilute the broader fight for accountability and justice for their daughter.

Ghosh Remains in Custody on Primary Charges

Legal counsel representing the family underscored that Ghosh does not walk free despite the bail order in the corruption matter. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues to hold him under serious sections of the law relating to criminal conspiracy and intentional delays in lodging the First Information Report (FIR) following the crime on August 9, 2024.

Ghosh was taken into custody by the central agency following intense public outrage and a direct mandate from the Calcutta High Court transferring the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the CBI. Parallelly, federal authorities had launched a separate investigation into systemic procurement kickbacks, illicit medical waste disposal, and institutional embezzlement during his tenure as principal.

The Broader Struggle for Accountability

The developments come amid ongoing scrutiny from civil society groups and resident doctors' associations across West Bengal, who sustained weeks of historic demonstrations demanding institutional transparency, hospital security overhauls, and uncompromised justice.

Legal representatives monitoring the court proceedings have noted that the victim's legal team is reviewing the specific grounds on which the bail was granted in the financial investigation to determine whether a formal challenge will be mounted in a higher judicial forum.

For the family, each court hearing remains an agonizing test of endurance. "Our entire existence now revolves around seeking justice for our daughter," her father remarked. "We urge the courts and the central agency to ensure that technicalities do not compromise the integrity of the prosecution."
