Sanjay Raut Targets Maharashtra Government Over Clearance to Fell 32,490 Trees Ahead of PM Modi's Visit
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has ignited a political row after flagging an official order permitting the felling of over 32,000 trees in Maharashtra ahead of the Prime Minister's visit.

Taking to social media and speaking to reporters, Raut mounted a fierce attack against the ruling Mahayuti administration led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar. He alleged that large-scale environmental degradation is being pushed through administrative channels under the guise of accelerated infrastructure modernization.
Opposition Raises Alarm Over Green Cover Loss
Raut questioned the urgency and scale of the clearance, drawing parallels between the current clearances and previous contentious environmental battles in the state.
"On one hand, the central government champions global climate initiatives and environmental sustainability, while on the other, thousands of mature trees are being systematically wiped out in Maharashtra right under the administration's watch," Raut stated, demanding an immediate review and revocation of the clearance order.
The opposition alliance argued that large-scale tree felling of this magnitude will severely impact regional microclimates, deplete urban green buffers, and exacerbate rising temperatures in rapidly developing urban and peri-urban belts of the state.
Government Cites Infrastructure and Compensatory Norms
While state officials have not officially released a detailed rebuttal to Raut's specific claims, sources within the administration maintained that all statutory clearances for linear infrastructure—including highways, railway corridors, and urban transit networks—are executed in strict accordance with established environmental laws.
Government representatives typically maintain that project-affected vegetation is subject to mandatory compensatory afforestation regulations, where agencies are legally obligated to plant multiple saplings for every tree removed. However, environmental groups and opposition leaders routinely dispute the survival rate and ecological equivalence of compensatory plantation drives.
Environmental Concerns in Maharashtra
Forest conservation has historically remained a sensitive flashpoint in Maharashtra's political discourse:
* The Aarey Precedent: The controversy mirrors earlier protracted legal and civic battles over the felling of trees in Mumbai's Aarey forest colony for a metro car depot. * Linear Infrastructure Pressures: Road widening, ring road construction, and industrial corridors across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and surrounding districts have increasingly clashed with local tree protection bodies. * Civic Activism: Regional green activists have consistently demanded independent third-party audits of proposed tree felling and genuine public consultation hearings before sanctioning mass clearances.
With political temperatures running high in the state ahead of key assembly elections, Raut's intervention has placed ecological conservation squarely at the center of the political narrative, putting pressure on the ruling alliance to justify the ecological costs of its rapid infrastructure rollout.
