UP MLC Elections: Samajwadi Party Alleges Booth Capturing, Petitions Election Commission for Repolling
The Samajwadi Party has lodged formal complaints alleging booth capturing and electoral irregularities in Uttar Pradesh MLC elections, urging the poll panel to conduct fresh voting.

Party leadership dispatched an urgent memorandum to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the state electoral officer, demanding the immediate cancellation of voting at contested polling stations and requesting fresh repolling under enhanced central security supervision.
Allegations of Administrative Bias and Rigging
In its formal representation, the Samajwadi Party alleged that local district administrations and police officials failed to act impartially, allowing unauthorized individuals allied with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to commandeer polling premises. SP leaders claimed that legitimate voters and polling agents representing the opposition were systematically threatened, assaulted, or barred entry from key booths.
According to party representatives, instances of coerced voting and disruption were particularly acute in specific rural pockets and high-stakes local authority constituencies, where council seats are decided by restricted electorates consisting of panchayat and urban local body representatives.
"The constitutional sanctity of the electoral process has been subverted in several districts," a senior Samajwadi Party official stated. "Our agents were forcibly ejected from voting centers, and state machinery remained a passive spectator. We have presented specific booth details and documentary evidence to the Election Commission demanding swift disciplinary action and repolling."
Administrative Response and Electoral Security
Election officials confirmed receipt of representations from opposition delegations, stating that district magistrates and returning officers had been instructed to examine webcasting footage, logbooks, and observer reports from all red-flagged centers.
District authorities maintained that overall voting proceeded under strict security protocols with deployed paramilitary forces and micro-observers tasked with ensuring transparent balloting. State officials emphasized that any credible complaint accompanied by verifiable irregularities would be reviewed pursuant to election commission guidelines.
Meanwhile, the ruling BJP dismissed the allegations as predictable political posturing, arguing that the Samajwadi Party routinely concocts claims of administrative overreach whenever it faces an impending electoral defeat.
Stakes in the Upper House
The biennial elections for the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council hold substantial strategic importance for political control of the state legislature's upper house. With local authority constituencies heavily influenced by regional grassroots representatives, MLC contests often function as a crucial barometer of political muscle and ground-level organizational reach between regional players and the state governing apparatus.
The Election Commission is expected to review the formal representations and decide whether to order scrutiny or schedule repolls in the challenged booths before the commencement of official counting.
