In a momentous milestone for Indian science and global theoretical physics, renowned string theorist Professor Ashoke Sen has been awarded the prestigious Oskar Klein Medal. The Swedish honor makes Sen the first Indian physicist to receive the accolade, placing him among an elite roster of luminaries that includes Stephen Hawking, Edward Witten, and Steven Weinberg.

The Oskar Klein Memorial Lecture and Medal, established jointly by Stockholm University and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, honors pioneering breakthroughs in fundamental physics and commemorates the theoretical legacy of Swedish physicist Oskar Klein.

Groundbreaking Contributions to String Theory

Professor Sen, currently affiliated with the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS-TIFR) in Bengaluru and formerly a distinguished professor at the Harish-Chandra Research Institute in Prayagraj, is celebrated worldwide for his foundational contributions to string theory.

His research fundamentally altered modern theoretical physics during the "second superstring revolution" in the mid-1990s. Among his most seminal achievements:

* Sen Conjecture and S-Duality: His breakthrough paper on strong-weak coupling duality (S-duality) provided rigorous mathematical evidence that seemingly distinct string theories were dual descriptions of the same underlying quantum framework. * Tachyon Condensation: Sen's pioneering work on open string tachyon condensation solved key riddles regarding unstable D-brane configurations in string theory. * Black Hole Microstates and Quantum Gravity: His research into black hole entropy via the attractor mechanism offered profound insights bridging quantum mechanics and general relativity.

Joining an Elite Scientific Pantheon

The Oskar Klein Medal, conferred annually in Stockholm, is considered among the highest academic recognitions in theoretical physics. Previous recipients include Nobel laureates and giants of cosmology:

* Steven Weinberg (1989) * Stephen Hawking (2003) * Edward Witten (2005) * Alan Guth (2006) * Frank Wilczek (2013)

Sen's addition to this roster underscores the global prominence of Indian theoretical physics, marking a career dedicated to unraveling the fundamental laws governing the universe.

A Legacy of International Acclaim

This latest laurel adds to a long list of premier international and national honors conferred upon Sen. He was among the inaugural recipients of the $3 million Fundamental Physics Prize (Breakthrough Prize) in 2012, awarded for opening the path to the realization that all string theories are different limits of the same underlying theory.

He has also been honored with India's highest scientific and civilian honors, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the Padma Shri, and the Padma Bhushan. Furthermore, Sen is a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences.

Academic institutions worldwide and the international scientific fraternity have hailed the announcement as a well-deserved recognition for decades of relentless intellectual inquiry into the deepest questions of quantum space and time.
