Uttarakhand Announces 100-Mile Himalayan Ultra Marathon From Mana Pass to Auli Next May
Uttarakhand will host a grueling 100-mile Himalayan Endurance Ultra Run connecting Mana Pass to Auli next May, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami unveiled the initiative, emphasizing the state's vision to marry high-octane adventure sports with sustainable border tourism and rural economic empowerment.
A Grasp on the Extreme: The Route Profile
The planned course represents one of the most physically demanding ultra-marathon circuits in Asia.
* Starting Point: Mana Pass (elevation exceeding 18,000 feet), historically renowned as an ancient trade route and one of the highest accessible vehicle passes globally. * Transit Route: Descent through rugged glacial moraines, passing the historic border settlement of Mana village, traversing the upper Alaknanda valley and Joshimath. * Finish Line: The scenic alpine meadows and ski resort of Auli (approximately 9,500 feet elevation).
Athletes will endure extreme atmospheric pressure fluctuations, freezing winds, and radical elevation changes, testing human endurance at thin-air altitudes where oxygen saturation is significantly reduced.
Fostering Border Tourism and Local Economies
The initiative forms a core component of Uttarakhand's broader strategy to showcase its remote highlands and align with national border tourism outreach. By anchoring the starting point in the Mana sector—often hailed as India's "first village"—the government intends to draw international attention to local culture, indigenous heritage, and eco-tourism.
"Uttarakhand possesses unmatched natural topography suited for world-class adventure sports," administration officials noted. "Hosting an endurance run of this caliber will not only put our high-altitude trails on the global ultra-running map but also inject economic vitality into remote mountain settlements."
Infrastructure and Safety Protocols
Organizing a 100-mile race in sensitive border terrain requires synchronized logistical coordination between state departments, the Indian Armed Forces, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and specialized medical extraction units.
Preparations are already underway to institute rigorous medical checkpoints, acclimatization zones, search-and-rescue teams, and satellite communication links across the 100-mile trail. The administration is also engaging with international ultra-running bodies to ensure global standardization, environmental sustainability, and a zero-waste trail footprint.
