In a major push to decongest key commercial districts and modernize urban infrastructure, the New Delhi municipal administration has greenlit an ambitious smart parking project across 157 designated locations. The initiative introduces automated surveillance, app-driven reservations, contactless payments, and a mandatory five percent reservation for women motorists.

The comprehensive overhaul aims to eliminate unauthorized parking rackets, curb traffic bottlenecks, and provide a seamless parking experience for thousands of daily commuters navigating the central administrative and commercial zones of the capital.

Tech-Enabled Infrastructure and Digital Payments

Under the newly unveiled framework, all 157 parking lots will be equipped with modern Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, automated boom barriers, and high-definition CCTV surveillance integrated into a centralized command and control centre.

Key technological features include: * FASTag and UPI Integration: Contactless, ticketless entry and exit powered by radio-frequency identification (RFID) and digital payment channels to minimize waiting times. * Real-Time Space Tracking: Commuters will be able to monitor slot availability and pre-book spots through a dedicated mobile application. * Variable Messaging Displays: Dynamic electronic signboards installed along major feeder roads will broadcast live occupancy numbers to prevent roadside queuing.

Dedicated Provisions for Women Drivers

Addressing commuter safety and accessibility, the civic body has mandated that at least five percent of all parking slots at each of the 157 sites be exclusively reserved for women motorists.

Officials confirmed that these designated spaces will be situated near entry and exit gates or well-illuminated primary access pathways to guarantee maximum security. The designated spots will be monitored round-the-clock via dedicated CCTV feeds, complemented by stationed civic marshals during peak hours.

Tackling Encroachments and Overcharging

For years, surface-level parking across Delhi's major retail hubs has suffered from rampant overcharging by private contractors and arbitrary street encroachments. By digitizing billing through automated time-stamped logs, the civic body intends to completely eliminate cash-based extortion and unauthorized parking attendants.

"The transition to an end-to-end automated parking management ecosystem will bring unprecedented transparency to revenue collection while significantly reducing vehicular idling and emissions caused by drivers searching for open slots," senior municipal officials stated during the policy briefing.

The phased rollout across Connaught Place, Khan Market, and adjoining central corridors is slated for completion within the coming fiscal quarters, setting a benchmark for intelligent transport systems across Indian metros.
