UP Police Smash Interstate Gang Stealing Electricity Transformers; 8 Held, 164 Kg Aluminium Wire Recovered
Uttar Pradesh Police dismantled an organized criminal syndicate targeting rural power transformers, arresting eight suspects and recovering 164 kg of stolen aluminium wire.

Major Crackdown on Infrastructure Sabotage
LUCKNOW — In a major breakthrough against organized crime targeting critical public infrastructure, Uttar Pradesh Police have dismantled a notorious criminal network responsible for a spate of electrical transformer thefts across multiple districts of the state. Eight key members of the syndicate were apprehended following an intelligence-led operation, resulting in the recovery of 164 kilograms of stolen aluminium wire, heavy dismantling tools, and transport vehicles used in the illicit trade.
The gang had become an operational menace for regional power distribution corporations, plunging scores of rural hamlets and agricultural tracts into darkness by systematically targeting unmanned sub-stations, tube-well connections, and roadside electrical transformers.
Modus Operandi: Precision Strikes in Remote Belts
According to preliminary investigative findings, the syndicate executed well-planned nocturnal raids across isolated rural stretches. Operating late at night, trained technicians within the gang would de-energize active transformer units using specialized insulated equipment before severing main supply cables.
Once grounded, the heavy steel casings were dismantled within minutes to extract high-value core components, specifically copper coils, aluminium winding wires, and cooling oil. The stolen metal was promptly loaded into commercial transport vehicles, concealed beneath agricultural cargo, and ferried to clandestine scrap processing units.
Police officials noted that the illicit trade in industrial-grade aluminium and copper scrap has witnessed a surge in black-market demand, driving local scrap dealers to finance specialized theft rings.
Seizures and Key Recoveries
During coordinated search operations across multiple hideouts, law enforcement teams seized a substantial haul of contraband, including:
* 164 kilograms of pure aluminium transformer winding wire stripped from recent theft sites. * Specialized metal-cutting equipment, heavy-duty spanners, hacksaws, and insulated safety gear. * Transport vehicles utilized for logistics and rapid cross-district movement. * Forged transit documents used to evade highway patrol scrutiny.
Extensive Interrogation Underway
Investigators are currently interrogating the eight arrested suspects to map the entire supply chain, including scrap merchants and regional smelting operations acting as receivers of stolen government property.
Senior police officials confirmed that charges under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) alongside stringent provisions of the Electricity Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act have been slapped on the accused. Further arrests of scrap racketeers and logistical facilitators are anticipated as forensic analysis of mobile call records progresses.
