State administrations across the eastern coastline of India have activated comprehensive emergency preparedness measures following warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) regarding an intensifying cyclonic system over the Bay of Bengal. In response to anticipated torrential downpours and squally winds, the Odisha government has ordered the closure of schools across vulnerable coastal districts, while neighbouring Andhra Pradesh has placed disaster response machinery on high alert.

Precautionary Closures Across Odisha

District administrations in coastal Odisha, including sensitive zones in Puri, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, and Balasore, have declared holidays for primary and secondary educational institutions. District collectors have been empowered to evaluate ground conditions and extend closures depending on local inundation and rainfall intensity.

State disaster management officials confirmed that school buildings in elevated regions are being inspected and designated as temporary cyclone shelters and relief hubs should localized evacuations become necessary.

Andhra Pradesh Activates Disaster Response Teams

In Andhra Pradesh, chief administrative authorities in north coastal districts—particularly Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Visakhapatnam—have mobilized local control rooms to monitor weather developments round the clock. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel have been pre-positioned in vulnerable low-lying regions to handle potential waterlogging, road blockages, and flash flooding.

Fishermen across both states have been strictly warned against venturing into deep sea waters, with coastal marine police and port authorities hoisting cautionary distant signals.

IMD Weather Outlook and Coastal Advisory

According to meteorological bulletins, the low-pressure depression over the Bay of Bengal has been gathering strength, driving severe moisture toward the eastern seaboard. Weather models indicate widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds between 50 and 70 km/h along coastal belts.

Residents in low-lying and coastal hamlets have been urged to remain vigilant, secure essential supplies, and monitor regular bulletins issued by local authorities as the weather system tracks along the coastline.
