The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune has withdrawn a book authored by former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student activist Umar Khalid from its central library, citing potential concerns over campus peace and order.

The administrative decision came after internal deliberations and objections raised regarding the inclusion of the publication within the premier science institute's repository. While the book had recently been inducted into the collection, university authorities deemed its continued presence on public shelves sensitive, leading to its quiet de-shelving.

Administrative Decision and Security Considerations

According to institutional sources, the primary rationale driving the decision was the prevention of potential confrontation or unrest on campus. The institute administration acted swiftly to maintain an atmosphere dedicated strictly to academic and scientific research, preferring to sidestep political polarization among researchers and students.

While the administration has maintained that institutional collections undergo periodic reviews, sources familiar with the matter confirmed that the sudden removal followed specific representations pointing to the political sensitivity surrounding Khalid.

Context Surrounding Umar Khalid

Umar Khalid, a former doctoral student at JNU, has been incarcerated since September 2020 under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the alleged larger conspiracy behind the 2020 Northeast Delhi communal riots.

His prolonged detention and ongoing legal proceedings have made his academic and public writings a point of intense contention across various university spaces in India. While his supporters continue to champion his academic rights and freedom of expression, administrative bodies across several higher education centers have repeatedly moved to curtail events, discussions, or materials associated with his name to avoid institutional controversies.

Debate Over Academic Autonomy

The move at IISER Pune has sparked muted debate within the academic fraternity regarding the scope of university libraries and intellectual autonomy. Faculty members and student groups across several central institutions have previously argued that university libraries should reflect diverse perspectives and scholarship without administrative censorship.

Conversely, campus authorities frequently find themselves walking a delicate tightrope, balancing academic liberties with the imperative to prevent volatile socio-political disputes from disrupting core scientific research and daily campus governance.

As of now, the administration has not issued an official public circular detailing whether the withdrawal represents a permanent ban or a temporary procedural review.
